CLIENT SITUATION

A top entertainment company needed assistance building a business plan to relaunch a TV network, pivoting a prior well-known brand from a cable TV model to a digital-first brand for gamer audiences across traditional and video sharing platforms.

CHALLENGE

Faced with an industry where the affiliate fee distribution model is no longer viable and advertising is shifting from cable TV towards digital platforms, the re-imagined network had to consider how to create a profitable business model primarily based on digital platform economics and less on cable TV advertising.

SOLUTION

With our deep working knowledge of the specific economics for digital platforms and traditional media, we delivered a three-phase approach to translate their vision into a concrete business plan and take the new service to market.

Phase 1: Rethink Assumptions

We took a bottom-up approach to build the business plan over three months, building revenue by distribution platform. We developed a highly cost-efficient production model with a mix of lean TV formats and video game streaming formats.

Phase 2: Engage and Seed

We collaborated with internal groups across strategic planning, research, sales, finance and legal to test and refine financial scenarios. Together with the division President, we presented the plan to the CFO to secure support for the new network.

Phase 3: Activate and Transform

Once funding was secured, Helene served as the interim COO of the new venture,  developing and implementing the go-to-market plan, including hiring and engaging business partners.

SUCCESS

Efforts resulted in successful multi-year support for the network with a dedicated staff and resources. The go-to-market roadmap, business plan, and their execution were successfully transferred to the new management team and they continue to guide the TV network’s development and hiring. The media network is set to launch in 2021.
